How to Compare Custom Sock Quotes Beyond the Unit Price

Custom sock samples, yarn, packaging and quotation specifications

The unit price is often the first number a buyer notices in a custom sock quotation.

However, two suppliers may use different assumptions even when both quotations describe the product as custom sports socks or private label socks.

Materials, construction, size combinations, packaging, inspection requirements and trade terms can all affect the quoted price. Before deciding which offer is more competitive, confirm that the suppliers are quoting for the same product and the same delivery conditions.

1. Check Whether the Product Specifications Match

Socks with a similar appearance may have different production requirements. Compare details such as:

  • yarn composition and thickness;
  • leg height, foot length and size range;
  • cushioning, mesh or arch-support construction;
  • the number and complexity of artwork colours;
  • reinforcement in the toe, heel or sole;
  • any agreed performance or testing requirements.

Both suppliers should work from the same artwork, specification sheet or reference sample.

A quotation for a basic construction cannot be compared directly with one that includes more complex knitting features.

2. Compare Quantities, Colours and Size Breakdowns

The total order quantity may not describe how production is divided.

An order split across several colours, sizes or artwork versions can create smaller quantities for each combination. Material preparation, machine adjustments, production changes and packaging management may also increase as the number of combinations grows.

When requesting a quotation, state:

  • the total estimated quantity;
  • quantity per colour;
  • quantity or ratio per size;
  • the number of artwork or logo versions;
  • whether different styles may be combined.

Minimum order quantity, price and production planning should be confirmed for the specific product and combination. They should not be assumed from the total order quantity alone.

3. Confirm What Packaging Is Included

One quotation may cover the socks only, while another may include retail-ready packaging.

Check whether the offer includes:

  • individual or multipair packing;
  • header cards, belly bands or boxes;
  • size labels, care labels and stickers;
  • barcodes and retail labels;
  • inner cartons, export cartons and shipping marks;
  • customer-specified packaging materials or tests.

If packaging is not included in the original quotation, adding it later may affect both cost and timing.

4. Understand the Trade Terms and Delivery Point

A unit price also needs to be read together with the trade term and named delivery point.

Confirm:

  • the applicable trade term;
  • the named delivery location;
  • quotation validity;
  • responsibility for freight, duties and customs clearance;
  • whether sampling, testing or other charges are separate;
  • how changes in material or quantity will be recalculated.

The formal quotation and order documents should define the final scope, responsibilities and cost boundaries.

Compare Suppliers Using the Same Request for Quotation

Send the same information to each supplier and ask them to identify what is included and excluded.

A useful request for quotation may contain:

  • product use and target market;
  • artwork, specification or reference sample;
  • material and construction requirements;
  • size, colour and quantity breakdown;
  • packaging requirements;
  • destination and preferred trade term;
  • expected project timing.

Unit price still matters, but it becomes useful only when the quotations are based on comparable requirements.
